In early 1958 DEC shipped its first products, the "Digital Laboratory Module" line. The Modules consisted of a number of individual electronic components and germanium transistors mounted to a circuit board, the actual circuits being based on those from the TX-2.

The Laboratory Modules were packaged in an extruded aluminum housing,intended to sit on an engineer's workbench, although a rack-mount bay was sold that held 9 laboratory modules.They were then connected together using banana plug patch cords inserted at the front of the modules. Three versions were offered, running at 5 MHz (1957), 500 kHz (1959), or 10 MHz (1960). The Modules proved to be in high demand in other computer companies, who used them to build equipment to test their own systems. Despite the recession of the late 1950s, the company sold $94,000 worth of these modules during 1958 alone, turning a profit at the end of its first year.

The original Laboratory Modules were soon supplemented with the "Digital Systems Module" line, which were identical internally but packaged differently. The Systems Modules were designed with all of the connections at the back of the module using 22-pin Amphenol connectors, and were attached to each other by plugging them into a backplane that could be mounted in a 19-inch rack. The backplanes allowed 25 modules in a single 5-1/4 inch section of rack, and allowed the high densities needed to build a computer.

The original laboratory and system module lines were offered in 500 kilocycle, 5 megacycle and 10 megacycle versions. In all cases, the supply voltages were -15 and +10 volts, with logic levels of -3 volts (passive pull-down) and 0 volts (active pull-up).

DEC used the Systems Modules to build their "Memory Test" machine for testing core memory systems, selling about 50 of these pre-packaged units over the next eight years. The PDP-1 and LINC computers were also built using Systems Modules (see below).

Modules were part of DEC's product line into the 1970s, although they went through several evolutions during this time as technology changed. The same circuits were then packaged as the first "R" (red) series "Flip-Chip" modules. Later, other module series provided additional speed, much higher logic density, and industrial I/O capabilities. Digital published extensive data about the modules in free catalogs that became very popular.

What is Profibus?

Introduction to Profibus

Profibus is short for "process field bus." It is one of the latest types of field bus communication standards specifically utilized in manufacturing automation. It is considered to be the most successful type of field bus. Profibus was first conceptualized in Germany in 1987 by 21 companies and organizations, and was then promoted in 1988 by the country's department of education and research. It is reported that at the end of 2008, 28 million devices from various industries had been installed using this standard.

Field Bus

  • Industries make use of complex automated manufacturing procedures. Such methods of production work based on organized layers of control. On top of this hierarchy is the human-machine interface level where control of the whole system ultimately resides. The next layer is composed of programmable logic controllers which are essentially computers specifically designed for controlling automated processes. At the lowest level are the field buses. These are the direct links between the logic controllers and the actual manufacturing machines.

Profibus FMS

  • Before the field bus, communication was only possible between two devices. With the implementation of field bus technology, the whole assembly line could be connected as if it were a local area network. Further development of this technology led to the creation of the profibus. Its big step forward was that it offered a unified and standardized concept for both production and process automation. The first profibus communication protocol devised was the Field bus Message Specification (FMS).

Profibus DP

  • In 1993, the FMS protocol was simplified and made faster and the result was a new protocol that replaced it called Decentralized Peripherals (DP). Profibus DP could transmit data at 12 megabits per second through ethernet or fiber optic cables. They are used to operate sensors, actuators, switches, valves and other production machines. Usually they stem from a central logic controller. This new protocol, however, can also be used to interconnect a core system composed of several logic controllers. This is a network arrangement called distributed intelligence.

Profibus PA

  • Another profibus variation is the Process Automation (PA) protocol. Its function is focused on process control, and it is used to operate measuring instruments. The bus lines utilized for the PA protocol carry their own electric current and are designed to be more durable and safer. Thus PA bus lines are ideal for hazardous areas in the automated assembly line. This protocol, however, transmits data at a slower rate than DP–31.25 kilobits per second.

Benefits

Both profibus variations, DP and PA, are used in tandem by industries in their manufacturing systems as they offer a single technical specification that allows control for both production and process. Before this technology, the production and process aspects of a manufacturing system were usually treated and managed separately. With profibus, the whole assembly line exists inside a seamless network. The positive results are that costs in investment, operation and maintenance are significantly reduced, and productivity is increased as there are fewer breakdowns in the manufacturing chain.

Someone asked,"Not so long ago I was appointed to take training for PLC`s since i fixed a few problems on site (computer and computer programming as a hobbie helped)

I have since been sent on Mitsubishi Basic and advanced Training courses. These have help me find my way around GX developer and understand alot of what is happening in the PLC

At my site we currently use A series PLCS and are starting to use Q series for new progects. I have also got IQ works for projects too.

What I am getting at really is what other training areas do you think would help me. i meanly fault find and slightly change the A series PLCs and i am currently teaching my self IQ works and im getting there with that.
with all of your combined knowledge of mitzy PLCs what areas have you have problems with maybe understanding the most. Networking maybe or remote IO`s just any areas you would deem best to know."

Some learner replied,"If I were in your position, I would start by taking an inventory of the controls equipment that I would be responsible for. I would record model numbers on all PLC CPUs, I/O cards, analog, motion, network or other cards in the rack. I would also look into the types of human machine interface products. If you have drives, record them also. Then I would check to see how all of the stuff on the equipment "talks" to each other (digital I/O, ethernet, MelsecNET, CCLink, serial, etc). Once you have an idea of all of this, I would ask your local Mitsu rep for a list of classes that might assist you on your journey. Depending on your troubleshooting and other electrical skills, you may also want to look into some general classes. The bottom line (as you probably learned long ago) is that the classes will give you the foundation or starting point. Old fashioned, hands-on training will get you the farthest. Introduction
USB-QC30R2 is the programming cable in which USB interface provides both the serial connection and RS232 signal conversion. Under the control of computer-driven driver, the programming cable makes it possible for the computer's USB interface to simulate the traditional serial (known as COM interface), thus various existing programming software such as communications software, monitoring software and other applications can be normally used. The working power supply of

this cable is directly from the USB port, but not the PLC programming interface. The two-color LED on the converter box indicates data’s transceiving status.
USB-QC30R2 is applicable to Mitsubishi Q series PLC (Q mode)

 

USB-QC30R2 programming cable simulate USB port as traditional serial port (usually COM3), which enables existing programming software(GX Developer) to communicate through simulated traditional port and PLC devices.

Setting of GX Developer
 

Please set the driver procedure according to the following steps:
1. Turning on PC power that will connect the USB programming cable and make sure the USB port working well.
2. Put the USB programming cable into USB port and Windows will detect the device and help to add new hardware and jump to new device setting. Insert the driver CD and click “next” to continue, or select the driver on the hard disk.
If Windows does not show “find new hardware”, please click “Universal Serial Main Cable controllers” in the hardware list of device manager, and choose the USB device with question mark. Click the right key of mouse and operate to update driver procedure.

If insert the driver CD,you should select the recommended item and click “Next”.

If the driver is saved on the hard disk, you should select the second item and click “Next”. You can find the driver on the “USB Drivers1” folder.

3. Windows will detect the setting information, and load the driver to install.

4. Continue to set up, copy the driver procedure files to your hard disk by Windows.

5. When Windows appears “Completing the Found New Hardware Wizard”, click “finish” to end setting up.
6. After setting up, please make sure the "Ports (COM and LPT)" of "Start \ Settings \ Control Panel \ system \ hardware \ Device Manager" appears "USB Serial Port(COMx)". This COMx is the COM port of the USB programming cable. From then on, as long as you insert the programming cable, the COM port will appear. You just have to choose this COM port in application software such as programming software or communication software.

How to change COM setting
1. Delete the driver procedure of all USB to UART products to discharge COM port source, and reset up USB programming cable driver procedure. The device manager will display the cable address COM3.
2. In Windows 2000/XP the COM slogan can be changed directly. Please double click COM port device that is need changing in the device manager, and the device attribute information window will appear. Choose “port setting” as the picture shows. Click "Advanced" button, and the advanced setting information window will appear. Set the COM port to the serial number you want and click "OK" button to complete.

Setting of GX Developer
After completing Driver installation, the corresponding COM port for the USB-QC30R2 programming cable will be displayed in the “Device Manager” of Window. The step next is just to choose this COM port in the programming software and other application software and keep other communication parameters as in the Default settings. And the following steps are exactly the same as in the traditional programming cables with RS232 interfaces.
Open the main windows form(GX Developer), choose “Online” menu then click “Transfer Setup…” and will appear “Transfer Setup” window.
Click “Serial” button of the PC side I/F, and choice the COM X interface as it in the Device Manager.

About Long Distance Communication
USB-QC30R2 doesn’t support long distance communication.

Notes and Troubleshoot:
1. If the USB programming cable could not be detected when opening the PC, or some other outstanding issues occur, please replug it again.
2.USB to UART is plug and play USB device. When data are being transmitted, please don’t disconnect it.
3.Sometimes when Windows System failures or outstanding issues when plug or unplug the USB cable occur, please restart the computer and PLC.
