The Difference Between MFI & MPI

Cars and acronyms may go together like peas and carrots, but the resulting alphabet soup could drive Buddha to fits. So you're excused for feeling a bit like a monkey at the prom, and wanting to ram a sock down your own throat in frustration when trying to tell the difference between terms like MPI and MFI. Especially these terms, which, like so many others, since they can often refer to the same kind of system using slightly different nomenclature.

TBI vs Multipoint Injection

  • The old throttle body injection system, or TBI, is something of an evolution of the carburetor, a stop-gap engineered to help manufacturers transition from carburetors to the electronic fuel-injection systems used today. The TBI unit bolts in place of the carburetor and sprays fuel under pressure into the engine. A multipoint system uses one injector for each one of the engine's cylinders. These individual injectors spray fuel directly onto the back of the intake valve, ensuring perfect fuel distribution to each cylinder.

MPI vs. MFI

  • In the common parlance, MPI and MFI are actually two different ways of referring to the same system. MPI breaks down as "multipoint injection," and MFI stands for "multipoint fuel injection." You could also abbreviate the latter as MPFI, MI or Fi. BMW originally dropped all but the last letter when referring to the same system and still uses the old "-i" suffix in spite of the fact that the company no longer manufactures a car without fuel injection.

MFI — Definition 2

  • The acronym MFI can also refer to mechanical fuel injection, a system in use since the earliest days of internal combustion. The primary difference between carburetion and fuel injection is that the former uses engine vacuum to suck fuel into the cylinders, while the latter sprays fuel into the engine under high pressure. A mechanical system is just that: it uses no electronic controls whatsoever, relying either on a fuel pump — as many diesels do — or a fuel distribution system to time fuel injection to crankshaft position.

EFI

  • Electronic fuel Injection differs from mechanical fuel injection in that it uses some sort of electronic controls to time the fuel injection cycle. The most basic type of EFI system consists of an oxygen sensor and a small control box that controls an auxiliary air valve. The fuel injection system is essentially mechanical, and the engine controls the air-to-fuel ratio by making minute adjustments the the amount of air going in. The modern EFI system uses a legion of sensors and electronic injectors to control how much fuel goes in and when.

Software settings of STEP7:
Entering the main interface of STEP7 programming software(SIMATIC Manager), clicking on “Options” menu under the “Set PG/PC Interface…” option into the PG/PC interface settings.
1. Double clicking on “PC Adapter(MPI)” into the RS232 interfaces and MPI set of parameters. The adapter does not support “PC Adapter(PROFIBUS)” option.
2. Clicking on “Local Connection” option set RS232 interface parameters, choosing PC/MPI to connect on the port of COM correctly, and it will adapt to the chosen baud rate automatically, both 19200bps and 38400bps of RS232 communication.
3. Clicking “MPI” to set port parameters of adapter MPI, acceptable at both 187.5Kbps and 19.2Kbps, and the adapter will adapt to its baud rate automatically. Others have already been set.
4. On-line test accessing point: Using PC/MPI to connect to MPI port and RS232 port of the computer. And then click on the button in the red circle as follow, if appearing the data inside the red line, the test has passed. Then one could operate on it.

How should you set the DIP switches on the PC/PPI cable for communication with the S7-200 ?

Instructions: When implementing the PC/PPI cable (6ES7 901-3CB30-0XA0) please note that this cable must be set accordingly for the various versions of STEP 7 Micro/WIN with which it is used.

Note: Please note that with E-Stand 01 of the cable there is no lettering on the housing to help set the DIP switches. Identification of the switch position on the DIP switches themselves is not relevant. 

Proceed as follows to set the DIP switches correctly:

• Turn the cable so that you can see the DIP switches and the status LEDs are on the right of the switches. 

• For switch position 1 you flip the relevant switch up. 

• For switch position 0 you flip the relevant switch down.

Make the following settings when implementing STEP 7 Micro/WIN up to and including V3.2 + SP3:

• For PPI Multimaster mode and Freeport mode connections you set Switch 5 to switch position 0. 

• Configure Switches 1-3 according to the baud rate used.

Make the following settings when implementing STEP 7 Micro/WIN from version 3.2.4.x: 

• For a Freeport mode connection you set Switch 5 to switch position 0. Configure DIP switches 1-3 according to the baud rate used. 

• For a PPI Multimaster mode connection you set Switch 5 to switch position 1. The baud rate no longer needs to be configured here.

Note: If you only have USB connections instead of a serial interface, you can either use the PC/PPI cable with a USB/RS232 converter on the USB connection or use the USB/PPI cable (6ES7 901-3DB30-0XA0).

The PC/PPI+ programming cable is the transformation electric cable from RS232 to the PPI connection (RS485), and it is suitable for Simens S7-200 series PLC and the TP170 touchscreen programming, the correspondence and the monitoring. The use of products:


1, PLC and computer connections for the PPI or free Communication, programming:
Insert the PC / PPI + cable’s RS485 plug into the programming mouth of S7-200PLC and the RS232 plug into the computer’s RS232 port. Chose the corresponding number of the COM port. Switch the 10bit, 11bit selection switch to 11 bit. The baud rate of the PC/PPI+ cable is adaptive from 0 to 115.2kpbs. There is no need to set that.
2, The long-distance communications between PLC and computer:
When having long-distance communications, the PC / PPI + requires additional external power and we should parallel 120Ωi end resistance n between the 3, 8 of RS485 plugs to eliminate signal reflection, as shown below:
3, long-distance communications between the PLC and computer via telephone lines:
You have to make a cross-adapter by yourself when you get the PC/PPI+’s RS232 port and the MODEM connected. Switch to the corresponding location according to the MODEM that it is 10 or 11.

How to Organize Cords and Cables

If your home office or computer room is like the majority of people's-you've probably got a "rat's nest" of cords and cables running around connecting your computer-peripherals and maybe even a stereo or a radio as well. All that clutter isn't just unsightly-it could be a real hazard for pets (or even kids) who might play in the room-and there's always the chance you can disconnect something by kicking a cord with your feet. There's lots of ways you can deal with cord clutter. Here are some.

How to Cut Down on Clutter

  • 1

    Unplug and disconnect all the cable and power cords connecting your electronics, then vacuum away any dust under and around your desk and clean the cords themselves with a cloth. (Be sure to label them if your aren't sure which ones go where.)

  • 2

    Determine how many components you have that need their own connection to household power, then install a couple of power bars (with surge protection) into different power outlets. Try to physically group the components by area (e.g. left side of the desk, right side of the desk) so you don't need to run any extension cords to reach the power bars.

  • 3

    Computer peripherals often come with long cords that in many cases aren't necessary. You may be able to replace some of the longer cords with shorter power cords (from computer stores).

  • 4

    Instead of running components with USB connections back to your computer, consider using a USB hub. Now you only have one connection running back to your computer and all the components can plug into the hub. Alternatively, USBs can be "daisy chained" so you could cut down on clutter by plugging components directly into each other.

How to Organize

  • 5

    Rather than running cables along the floor, you can install cable hooks (look like an upside down letter "T" with slightly curved ends) on the underside of your desk. These will keep cables up out of the way so you won't accidentally disconnect anything by kicking a cord.

  • 6

    Use plastic cable clips that you can open and close or Velcro cable ties that are also reusable and can hold groups of cables together so they don't get all knotted, twisted and intertwined.

  • 7

    Split tubing (a tube about ½ inch to 1 inch in diameter and split along one side) will hold cables together in one place, but allows you to add or break out cables at various locations and works well in some situations.

  • 8

    Consider drilling a 1 ½-inch or 2-inch hole in a corner or near the rear of your desk to run cables down through. This will keep them out of the way rather than running them over the side or back of your desk. Color-coordinated grommets are available to fit into the hole giving your desk a nice, finished look.

The setting of driver procedure

Please set the driver procedure according to the following steps:

  1. Turning on PC power that will connect the USB programming cable and make sure the USB port working well.
  2. Put the USB programming cable into USB port and Windows will detect the device and help to add new hardware and jump to new device setting. Insert the driver CD and click “next” to continue, or select the driver on the hard disk.

If Windows does not show “Found New Hardware Wizard”, please click “Universal Serial bus controllers” in the hardware list of device manager, and choose the USB device with question mark. Click the right key of mouse and operate to update driver procedure.

Usage:

1, Enter STEP7 Micro / WIN programming software and click "Settings PG / PC interface", check the "PC / PPI cable (PPI)" and click "Properties…" button.
2, Select "USB" option in "Local Connection".
3, Set up the Station Parameters settings in "PPI" as following: Address: 0, Timeout: 1s .
Set up the Network Parameters in "PPI" in accordance with the needs of you. You can choose any of the following:
Advanced PPI: check the Advanced PPI.
Multiple Master Network: check Multiple Master Network.
General PPI: do not check any of option, which is the default option.
select a baud rate as the same with the PLC. If you do not know that the PLC baud rate can be arbitrary choice one.Click "OK" button to return to the main menu interface.

PPI Multi-Master Cable of USB/PPIM+ no longer support the early version of the low CPU21X series PLC.

PPI Multi-Master Cable of USB/PPIM+ do not support Freeport communication and MODEM communication.

Long-distance communications:

The largest communications range between the USB/PPIM+ and PLC are up to 2 kilometers (9.6K bps) or 1 km(187.5Kbps),when external plus terminals 120 ohm resistance is needed to connect between the pin3 and pin8 of the RS485 ports (DB9 Male) to eliminate signal reflection. And a PFB-G Bus Isolators is needed to install at the end of PLC. 0.22 mm2 or more unshielded twisted pair lines are used for Communications. When the distance is longer than the length of cable, a RS485 repeaters (model: E485GP), can be installed in the bus for extending the distance.

Because the power of USB / PPIM + all supplied from the USB ports of the computer, you do not need to consider power supply when extended the length of cable. It’s better than the similar products of Siemens.

Please Note: USB interface cable cannot be extended.

4. Continue to set up, copy the driver procedure files to your hard disk by Windows.

5. When Windows appears “Completing the Found New Hardware Wizard”, click “finish” to end setting up.

6. After setting up, please make sure the "port (COM and LPT)" of "Start \Settings \ Control Panel \ system \ hardware \ Device Manager" appears
"CP2101 USB to UART Bridge Controller(COMx)". This COMx is the COM message of the USB programming cable.

From then on, as long as you insert the programming cable, the COM port will appear.

You just have to choose this COM port in application software such as programming software or communication software.

The deletion of driver procedure
Deleting driver procedure is to discharge source of COM port so that other
device can be used. When driver procedure has error, it should be deleted and reset up. Please delete the driver procedure as follows:
1. Unplug the USB programming cable from you PC.
2. Choose “USB Serial Converter Drivers”from "Add or Delete Programs” in operation panel, and click the “Change/Remove” button.

How to change COM setting
1. Delete the driver procedure of all USB to UART products to discharge COM port source, and reset up USB programming cable driver procedure.

The device manager will display the cable address COM3.
2. In Windows 2000/XP the COM slogan can be changed directly. Please double click COM port device that is need changing in the device manager,
and the device attribute information window will appear. Choose “port setting” as the picture shows. Click "Advanced" button,

and the advanced setting information window will appear. Set the COM port to the serial number you want and click "OK" button to complete.

Setting of Step 7-MicroWin

Open the main windows form(Step7-MicroWin), click “Set PG/PC Interface” of the left view and will appear PG/PC setting window.

1.Double click “PC/PPI cable(PPI) ” to open COM port and PPI port parameter setting dialog box.

2.Click “Local Connection” to set COM port parameter, choose correctly COM port in the device manager after install the driver,

and set the transmission rate as 9600bps or 19200bps,which is both OK, then the USB/PPI will adapt the baud rate automatic.

About Long Distance Communication
For USB/PPI, the largest communication distance is up to 2000m at the communication speed of 9600bps.

It needs to splice 120ohm terminal resistance between 3 and 8 pin on the RS485 port(DB9 Male) to eliminate signal reflection.

But requires one PFB-G for each PLC.

Notes and Troubleshoot
1. If the USB programming cable could not be detected when opening the PC, or some other outstanding issues occur, please replug it again.
2.USB to UART is plug and play USB device. When data are being transmitted,please don’t disconnect it.
3. Sometimes when Windows System failures or outstanding issues when plug or unplug the USB cable occur, please restart the computer and PLC.
4. USB/PPI cable don’t support “USB” interface in the Step7-MicroWin,so you should choose “COM” port.
5. If the COM port with “*” symbol in the software,such as “*COM3”,it indicates this COM port is at fault,pls exit programming software and then replug the USB port or reinstall the USB driver.
6. It doesn’t support 187.5Kbps baud rate.

Usage:

1, Enter STEP7 Micro / WIN programming software and click "Settings PG / PC interface", check the "PC / PPI cable (PPI)" and click "Properties…" button.

2,Select "USB" option in "Local Connection".

3, Set up the Station Parameters settings in "PPI" as following: Address: 0, Timeout: 1s .

Set up the Network Parameters in "PPI" in accordance with the needs of you. You can choose any of the following:

Advanced PPI: check the Advanced PPI.

Multiple Master Network: check Multiple Master Network.

General PPI: do not check any of option, which is the default option.

select a baud rate as the same with the PLC. If you do not know that the PLC baud rate can be arbitrary choice one.

Click "OK" button to return to the main menu interface.

4, click on the main menu interface of "communication" button to enter the PLC interface connection, check the "search all baud rate" box, and then double-click on the "Double-click refresh”. Long-distance communications:

The largest communications range between the USB/PPIM+ and PLC are up to 2 kilometers (9.6K bps) or 1 km(187.5Kbps),when external plus terminals 120 ohm resistance is needed to connect between the pin3 and pin8 of the RS485 ports (DB9 Male) to eliminate signal reflection. And a PFB-G Bus Isolators is needed to install at the end of PLC. 0.22 mm2 or more unshielded twisted pair lines are used for Communications. When the distance is longer than the length of cable, a RS485 repeaters (model: E485GP), can be installed in the bus for extending the distance.

Because the power of USB / PPIM + all supplied from the USB ports of the computer, you do not need to consider power supply when extended the length of cable. It’s better than the similar products of Siemens.
